Great TV... Interference with ATT UVerse Equipment May 25, 2010 Arnold Castro (Sugar Land, TX) TV is great. The sound quality is something I was not expecting, and since it is on a small room there is no need to put surround (it really is that good). The only issue I found (I actually thought there was something wrong with the TV) is that it causes interference with ATT UVerse Equipment. The solution is to disable the automatic light adjustment on the TV (change it from Auto to Standard or any other Setting, just not "Auto"). Other than that little interference issue it is a great TV.
Toshiba HDTV is the best June 14, 2010 Jack J. Natterman (Golden, Colorado USA) When I ordered this TV, I used Consumer Reports to evaluate which TV was best. This Toshiba was not ranked first.
However, since we already had an older cathode ray tube Toshiba TV and a DVD/VCR Toshiba recorder, it seemed likely that we would select the Toshiba HDTV.
We are happy that we selected the Toshiba since the quality of the HDTV matches that found on the other Toshiba equipment that we have.
We are very happy with our purchase.
I'm so glad I bought this tv June 11, 2009 James Sparks (Hooks, TX USA) 28 out of 29 found this review helpful
I bought this tv last week and so far have really been satisfied. I had a toshiba for 11 years before this one, and never had a problem with it, so while I didn't buy this tv solely because it was a Toshiba, but it certainly was a benefit.
Here's the scoop on the tv as far as I can tell.
Pros: The tv is 120Hz and is the most affordable lcd tv this size with that type of Hz. Here's why that's important. If you like to watch sports or play video games, the lower the number is in Hz the slower the processer is in transferring the movement on the screen. But the higher the HZ the faster it will go. 60Hz is available and is less expensive, but if you can afford the 120Hz you should get it, and with this toshiba you can.
Another pro is the ease in set-up. You literally plug it in, turn it on, answer a few easy questions, and you're done.
It also looks cool, the toshiba light up on the front has absolutly no value to the picture, but it looks way cool.
The Cons:
The sound is the biggest liability to the TV. If you plan to use a sound system to compliment the tv then this is not an issue, but if you plan to use the installed speakers in the TV, you will notice that the lower tones are hard for Toshiba(It distorts them, a little). This is why I gave the tv 4 instead of 5 stars.
The remote isn't as flashy as the samsung, but it is functional and has a pretty cool glow in the dark feature.
In short,, if you are on a budget but you really want a good lcd tv at least 40 inches then this is a GREAT buy. If money is no object then you should probably look at the Samsung led tv's(they are amazing, but cost 3 times as much money)
An all around contender, a steal for the price! February 21, 2010 Michael R. Smith (Elizabeth, NJ) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I was looking for a replacement for a 32 inch Toshiba LCD which has served me well over the years. Deterred by mixed reviews I was looking at everything but Toshiba. I purchased a 37" Vizio XVT series which is an excellent all around television...except for very muddy black levels. It just wouldn't make it as my primary display. I came back to Toshiba and could not avoid the value. A 40 inch LCD with 120 hz processing for less than $700.00...how could I not at least give it a try? I will say that out of the box I thought the picture was just o.k. It took me quite a bit of tweaking to get a satisfactory picture but now I would put the set up against anything else out there. Here is my detailed review:
Design: Nothing fancy here. Glossy black frame with the highly touted deep lagoon design along the bottom. It adds a nice touch but still a very basic nice looking lcd tv. The base does not swivel but damn is it a sturdy platform for this tv. You can also choose to turn off the lit Toshiba logo on the bottom of the screen.
Blacks/Whites: WOW! This is the strong point for this tv. The black level is easily equal to anything else out there and better than most. Letterbox frames are as dark as the bezel! Whites are equally bright and impressive. This being considered it was a nightmare to get the tv to produce satisfactory shadow detail. Finally, I adjusted the static gamma to level 10, and along with my other adjustments have found great detail.
Color: Another setting that I had to mess around with quite a bit. Now I have reds that pop without becoming orange as the Samsungs tend to do and I have an all around natural color palette.
Motion: I have found no problems with motion on this set. Actually, I would rate the smooth motion feature far ahead of the competition. Unlike other lcd's there is no soap opera effect, it is very subtle. Watching blu-ray discs you really get a true film like presentation.
Viewing effects: I would say that the off angle performance of this tv is very good. The matte screen deflects all but direct light. I have read poor reviews for viewing angle but I have to disagree.
Sound: When I first turned this tv on I was horrified. I had read that the sound was terrible but didn't expect it to be this bad. Thankfully after turning off the extend feature, which is virtual surround, the echo was gone. The sound quality is fine! It is not like listening to a hi-fi system but it is clear and fine for normal viewing.
Remote: I have always liked this remote and the Toshiba menu system has gotten even better over the years.
Conclusion: With a little tweaking this is a very good television at an incredibly low price. In addition to sterling high definition performance, standard definition looks better than on most of the competition. If your budget is tight you can have a truly high end television with the Toshiba 40xv645u. I highly recommend this set.
An excellent TV, but . . . . August 3, 2009 Miss (North Little Rock, Arkansas USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I agree with all the positive reviews here, but if you need to use closed captioning, you might want to read Freiwil's review of the 46-inch Regza at Toshiba REGZA 46XV645U 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black He is correct in saying that you have to use the cable box's closed captioning option because CC is not transmitted through the HDMI cable. I called Toshiba to confirm this, and the rep said this is true. I really hate that because the TV has many CC options for font, size, and so on that are not available via cable TV. Also, others have mentioned a set-up issue (the set-up screen occurring every time you turn on the TV) on sets built before a certain date. The Toshiba rep admitted this is a problem, but she mailed a card to insert in one of the slots on the side to update the firmware and avoid this problem in the future. For the price, this is an excellent buy. The technician who set up our TV said that he thought the Sanyo top-of-the-line had gotten around the problem with CC. I hope Toshiba can do that! However, the higher end Sanyo we priced was $[...] more than the Toshiba.
